About Settlement Periods

UK electricity settlement periods are 30-minute intervals used for trading and balancing the power grid. Each day typically has 48 settlement periods, starting at midnight local time.

Clock Changes

Twice a year, the number of periods changes due to British Summer Time (BST) transitions:

  • Spring (last Sunday of March): 46 periods — the 01:00-02:00 hour is skipped
  • Autumn (last Sunday of October): 50 periods — the 01:00-02:00 hour occurs twice
